Overview

Kashmit Great Lakes Trek

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek (KGL) is an adventure that speaks for itself. The very name evokes the stunning natural beauty of the lakes nestled in the Kashmir region. This trek offers participants a once-in-a-lifetime journey through breathtaking landscapes, filled with magnificent memories and physically demanding moments. The serene beauty of Kashmir's lakes, combined with the tranquil atmosphere, casts a magical spell on trekkers. Even the desolate, snow-clad mountains that rise majestically around the lakes add to the trek's awe-inspiring appeal. Often called "Paradise on Earth," Kashmir is the perfect setting for this remarkable trekking experience.

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is moderately challenging, typically spanning 7 to 10 days and covering approximately 63 km. The trek reaches altitudes of over 4,000 meters, offering a rewarding and transformative experience on multiple levels—physically, mentally, and emotionally. While nothing can fully prepare a trekker for the inner conflicts and doubts about their stamina during the journey, the sense of accomplishment at the end is unmatched.

To ensure an enjoyable and memorable experience, trekkers are advised to prepare in advance. The trek demands a certain level of physical fitness, so maintaining good health and conditioning before embarking on the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is crucial. Self-training routines like regular gym workouts, uphill walking, jogging, cycling, and stretching are essential for building endurance. Mental strength is just as important, helping trekkers push through the challenges along the way.

Who Can Join?

No prior trekking experience is required to join the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. A passion for adventure and the ability to trek 5 km in 30 minutes are key. However, individuals with heart conditions, high blood pressure, asthma, or epilepsy should refrain from participating, as the trek is physically demanding.

Altitude: 3,505 m . Time taken: 6.5 hours, 9 kms . The approach to the valley of Nichnai is a gentle one, and it leads us over a renowned tabletop that offers a panoramic view of a chain of mountains that includes the Thajwas Mountain range and Bear Valley. The Nichnai Valley is well-known for its reputation as the "valley of wildflowers." We set a tent in the lush grassland of Nichnai's meadows.

Altitude: 3,650 m . 5.5 hours and 13 km of travel time. We make our ascent into the Kishansar Valley, also known as the Vishansar Valley. This is a breathtaking valley that has two lakes that are peacefully situated between two towering mountains. Trout fish of many different colours may be seen in abundance in the lakes. Both of these lakes are important to local religion, and their water eventually flows into the Kishanganga River, which winds its way through Gurez valley.

Altitude: 4200m . Time taken:6 hours, 14 kms .  Over the Gadsar pass, we descend into the Gadsar Valley below. On one side, the pass provides a panoramic view of the Kishansar/Vishansar valley, while on the other side, it overlooks the Gadsar valley.  Be enchanted by the vast, undulating fields that are dotted with flowers of many different colours.

The lake and lowering watersand in the Gadsar Valley are two of the valley's most notable features. We set up the tents next to a canal that leads from the Gadsar Lake into the surrounding wilderness. According to local legends, both the water and the fish in Gadsar Lake have curative properties.

Altitude: 3,600 m .  Time taken: 5 hours, 12 kms . The terrain becomes more manageable and peaceful on the fifth day of the hike. It consists of a repeat of gentle ascents and descents across huge meadows that extend along a series of interesting mountain ranges. We set up camp for the night next to one of the canals that wind their way around the Satsar valley, which is home to seven different pristine mountain lakes.

Both the Satsar Valley and the Gangbal Valley are separated by the pass.  We make our way up a gentle slope that brings us to the Nundkol Lake, which is strategically located at the base of Harmukh. Majestic appearance is achieved by the combination of the Harmukh, the lake, and the Harmukh's reflection in the lake.

Altitude: 2,271 m . Time taken: 6.5 hours, 13 kms . On the last day of the hike, we make our way down into the valley of Naranag.  On the same day, we will make the journey to Srinagar in order to spend the night there.
