How to Reach Meghalaya from Delhi, Mumbai, or Kolkata: A Women Traveler’s Guide

Meghalaya, the ‘abode of clouds,’ is one of India’s most magical destinations for women travelers. With its misty hills, cascading waterfalls, and warm local hospitality, it attracts women solo travelers, all-women travel groups, and members of the Meghalaya Women Travel Group alike. But before diving into Meghalaya’s charm, you need to know how to reach this northeastern gem comfortably and safely.

Getting There from Major Indian Cities

From Delhi: The easiest route is via air. Board a direct flight from Delhi to Guwahati Airport (GAU), the gateway to Meghalaya. Guwahati is well connected by road to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. From the airport, you can book:

A shared cab (budget-friendly)
A private taxi (more comfortable and flexible)

Travel time from Guwahati to Shillong is about 3.5 to 4 hours, and the drive is scenic, with hilly roads and occasional waterfall views.

From Mumbai: There are no direct flights to Shillong, but multiple airlines fly from Mumbai to Guwahati. Choose either a direct flight or a connecting one via Delhi or Kolkata. From Guwahati, the road journey remains the same as above.

From Kolkata: You have several options:

By Air: Direct flights to Guwahati are available daily.
By Train: Overnight trains like Saraighat Express or Kamrup Express connect Kolkata to Guwahati.
By Bus: Buses are available but not recommended for comfort or safety.

Once in Guwahati, proceed by taxi or bus to Shillong.
